The Complete Guide to Printing on Wood
Everything you need to know about wood printing — how it works, what it costs, what it’s used for, and why it’s the most exciting thing to happen to print media in decades. From Inspirwood – the UK’s specialists in printing on wood.
Introduction: Why Wood?
There’s a moment that happens when someone hands you a wooden business card for the first time. You turn it over in your fingers, feel the grain, notice the way the printed colour sits within the natural texture of the wood — and something shifts. It doesn’t feel like print. It feels like craft.
That’s not an accident. It’s the whole point.
Inspirwood has been producing printed wooden products since 2004 — before the technology existed to do it properly, before most businesses had thought about it, and long before sustainability became the defining concern of our era. We started with a piece of rescued wood veneer and a question: what if you could print on this? Two decades later, we’re the UK’s leading wood printing specialists, producing everything from wooden business cards and bespoke signage to trophies, labels, packaging, and event materials — for clients ranging from independent artists to the National Trust.

This guide is for anyone thinking seriously about printing on wood for the first time. By the end, you’ll understand exactly how it works, what it’s suited to, what it costs, and — perhaps most importantly — why making the switch from plastic to wood is one of the best decisions your business can make.
How Does Wood Printing Actually Work?
The short answer: UV flatbed printing. But let’s explain what that means, because it’s more interesting than it sounds.
Traditional printing methods — offset, screen, digital — are designed for flat, uniform surfaces. Paper. Card. Plastic. Wood is none of those things. It has grain, texture, natural variation, and it absorbs ink differently depending on the species, the cut, and the moisture content. Printing on wood properly requires both the right technology and the knowledge to use it well.
The technology we use is UV flatbed printing — a process in which the wood is placed on a flat bed, and a print head passes over the surface at approximately 1.5mm above it, depositing ink in precise droplets. The ink is cured instantly by UV light as it’s applied, which means it bonds directly to the wood surface without smearing or soaking in. The results are vivid, durable, and photo-quality.

Our machines use an 8-colour printing process, which includes white ink — critical for achieving bright, accurate colours on darker wood species — as well as options for matt or gloss varnish and spot UV textures. The combination of a visible wood grain and full-colour printing creates a depth and warmth that simply cannot be replicated on any other substrate.
We also combine UV printing with laser cutting, CNC routing and traditional carpentry techniques. This means we can print onto a shape, cut it to that shape, engrave detail into it, and finish it — all in one production facility in Devon. It’s this combination of capabilities that sets Inspirwood apart from any general-purpose printer.

What Types of Wood Can Be Printed On?
If the wood is clean, dry and flat, we can almost certainly print on it. That said, different species and substrates produce very different results — and choosing the right wood for your project is as important as the design itself.
Sheet materials
These are our most commonly used substrates for volume production:
- Birch plywood — clean, pale and consistent, it gives crisp detail and bright colour. The most versatile option for most projects.
- Marine ply — denser and more durable, ideal for outdoor applications and anything that needs to last.
- Veneered MDF — an extremely smooth surface for the finest print detail. Ideal for premium business cards and high-end signage.
- OSB (oriented strand board) — a distinctive, rustic aesthetic that works brilliantly for certain retail and hospitality applications.
Solid hardwoods
For projects requiring a premium feel and genuine material presence:
- Oak — classic, characterful, and exceptional outdoors. Used for our most prestigious plaques and signage.
- Walnut — rich, dark grain that makes printed colour sing. A favourite for trophies and luxury merchandise.
- Bamboo — technically a grass, but it behaves like wood and has excellent sustainability credentials.
- Ash, maple, cherry, beech — each with their own grain character and tonal quality.
We can print on veneers as thin as 0.5mm and timber up to 150mm thick. We can also work with reclaimed wood and customer-supplied materials — though we’d always recommend sending a sample first so we can test before committing to a full run.
One thing worth understanding: the grain is part of the design. Smoother surfaces give crisp, precise results. More textured, grainy wood gives a beautifully rustic quality that can’t be faked. The best wood printing projects work with the wood, not against it.

What Can You Make? A Product Guide
The honest answer is: almost anything. If it can be made from wood and it’s a reasonable size, we can print on it, cut it, engrave it, and finish it. But here are the product categories we produce most frequently:
Wooden Business Cards
Our original product and still one of our most popular. A wooden business card is 85mm x 55mm, just 1.5mm thick, and made from real sustainably sourced wood. In a world where most business cards go straight in the bin, a wooden card gets kept, passed around, commented on. We’ve produced wooden business cards for creative agencies, architects, luxury brands, eco-conscious businesses, and everyone in between. Minimum order 40.
Wooden Signage
From small directional signs to large-format wall installations, we produce signage for retail environments, hospitality venues, heritage sites, event spaces, offices, and public spaces. The National Trust uses our wooden trail boards across multiple properties. The Royal Shakespeare Society trusted us with their oak seat dedication plaques. We can incorporate printing, engraving, routing, and carpentry to achieve virtually any look.
Labels and Tags
Wooden labels transform product packaging. They’re tactile, premium, and immediately communicate quality and sustainability. We produce thousands of labels for brands across fashion, food and drink, cosmetics, crafts, and retail — from small boutique producers to international names. Every label is 100% plastic-free and biodegradable.
Wooden Postcards
Wooden postcards are postable — yes, really — and they’re remarkable pieces of communication. We produce thousands every year for artists, tourist destinations, event organisers, and brands. They arrive in someone’s hand and they keep them. They don’t get recycled.
Trophies and Awards
We have a long and proud history of producing wooden trophies and awards. Our relationship with Surfing England has produced some of the most-loved trophies in UK competitive surfing — beautifully designed, sustainably made, and genuinely treasured by recipients. We also produce corporate awards, sports trophies, and recognition pieces for events of all sizes.
Merchandise and Branded Items
Wooden merchandise is having a significant moment. Branded items, gifts, Christmas decorations, promotional pieces — when they’re made from wood, they feel considered rather than throwaway. We produce everything from printed wooden keyrings to large-format branded merchandise, and we can work as a white-label production partner for agencies and product companies.
Point of Sale and Hospitality
Menus, table numbers, receipt holders, loyalty cards, wayfinding — wood transforms the feel of a hospitality environment. We work with hotels, restaurants, bars, and venue operators to replace plastic and laminated alternatives with sustainable wooden equivalents that actively enhance the aesthetic of the space.

Is Wood Printing Right for Your Project?
Wood printing is genuinely brilliant for a wide range of applications. But we’d rather give you an honest picture than oversell it.
Wood printing works brilliantly when:
- You want your printed materials to stand out and be remembered.
- Sustainability is a genuine priority — for your business, your brand, or your clients.
- You’re replacing plastic in any form — cards, signage, packaging, labels.
- A premium, tactile quality is part of what you’re communicating.
- Your audience cares about provenance, craft, and environmental responsibility.
- You want something genuinely unique — because no two pieces of wood are identical.
Wood printing may not be ideal when:
- You need delivery in fewer than five working days (though rush jobs are sometimes possible — always ask).
- Your design requires completely flat, uniform colour with no grain visible whatsoever.
- Your budget is extremely tight at very low quantities — though the per-unit cost drops significantly at volume.
If you’re not sure whether wood is right for your specific project, just get in touch. We’ll give you an honest answer.

How Much Does Wood Printing Cost?
Pricing depends on the type of wood, the size and quantity of items, the complexity of cutting or engraving, and whether design work is involved. As a rough guide:
- Wooden business cards: from approximately £1.50–£2.00 per card at minimum quantities, reducing significantly at volume.
- Wooden postcards: comparable to business cards, depending on size and quantity.
- Signage: highly variable depending on size, wood species, and complexity — we’ll always provide a full itemised quote.
- Labels and tags: very cost-effective at volume, with pricing depending on size, shape and print complexity.
- Trophies and awards: priced per piece, depending on design, wood species, and production complexity.
One thing worth knowing: economies of scale are significant in wood printing. A run of 500 wooden business cards costs considerably less per card than a run of 50. If you’re planning a larger project, it’s always worth discussing volume pricing with us.
We provide detailed quotes usually within 24 hours of receiving your brief. There are no hidden costs and we’ll always flag anything that might affect price before we start. Get in touch at sales@inspirwood.co.uk or call 01626 870 426.

The Environmental Case: Wood vs Plastic vs Paper
This isn’t just a nice-to-have for Inspirwood. It’s the reason we exist.
When Pete and Kate Williams founded Inspirwood in 2004, they did so with a clear environmental and social purpose: to provide beautiful, functional alternatives to plastic and wasteful paper. That mission has only become more urgent in the years since.
Wood vs plastic
Plastic products — cards, signage, packaging — can persist in the environment for 500 years or more. They shed microplastics, they don’t biodegrade, and their production is energy-intensive and petrochemical-dependent. Wood, by contrast, is fully biodegradable, renewable, and — when grown in sustainably managed forests — actively carbon-sequestering. A plastic card is a 500-year problem waiting to happen. A wooden card becomes compost.
Wood vs paper
Paper has environmental costs that are often underestimated. Conventional paper production is chemically intensive, uses enormous volumes of water, and — when it comes to coated and laminated print materials — is not easily recyclable. Sustainably sourced wood is a simpler, more traceable, more durable material with a significantly better environmental footprint for most print applications.
Our certifications
Inspirwood is the only wood printing company in the UK certified by both the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) and the PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification). These certifications mean every piece of wood we use can be traced back to a sustainably managed forest, with verified chain-of-custody documentation at every stage.
Beyond certification, we run our entire operation on renewable energy, generate no landfill whatsoever, avoid plastic throughout our production and packaging processes, and employ local staff. Sustainability isn’t a policy document for us. It’s how we work.

How to Get Started With Inspirwood
Getting a quote is straightforward. Here’s what you’ll need to tell us:
- What product you’re looking for (business cards, signage, labels, trophies, etc.)
- Your approximate quantity
- Any size or dimension requirements
- Your timeline — especially if you have a firm deadline
- Whether you have artwork ready, or need our design team to help
You don’t need to have everything figured out. If you have a rough idea and want to explore possibilities, that’s exactly the kind of conversation we enjoy. Our in-house design studio, Inspirations, can take a brief from concept to production — so even if you’re starting from scratch, we can make it happen.
We’ll come back to you with a detailed quote, usually within 24 hours. Once you’re happy, we take payment, approve artwork, and go into production. Standard turnaround is 10–14 working days.
We’ve been doing this since 2004. We’ve printed for national institutions, global brands, independent artists, and everyone in between. Whatever you’re imagining — we’ve probably done something like it. And if we haven’t, we’d love to.
